Job Summary/Basic Functions
Position Objective/Purpose of Position:
To maintain a corporate style financial mechanism for Virginia State University, which will require the monthly compilation of all critical financial data and other statistics necessary to determine the financial condition of the University and how the University is performing against established goals and objectives that speak to its financial and managerial health.
Job Duties:
35% - Coordinate monthly, quarterly and yearly the collection, analysis, and formatting of a wide variety of financial, statistical, and other information necessary to report the performance of the University financial condition for review by DOA, SCHEV, NCAA, VSU senior level management and Board of Visitors to ensure compliance with state, federal and university guidelines.
40% - Assist in planning, coordinating and preparation of the University’s ACFR and Financial Statements which are prepared annually for review and publication by DOA and APA.
10% - Assist other departments within and outside of the Controller’s area with preparation of financial information when deemed necessary by management to ensure all financial information is current.
5% - Prepare Financial Analyses and Reports for review by senior management to report status of financial condition at a given timeframe.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of college and university accounting and reporting requirements.
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, and management standards for higher education.
Considerable knowledge of the use of PC software applications, data processing techniques and automated accounting systems.
Must have a solid grasp of financial administration and internal control systems.
Demonstrated ability to apply and adapt established accounting methods to a variety of agency or institutional fiscal needs.
Demonstrated ability to perform strategic thinking and possess excellent analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to assemble, analyze, and prepare financial reports and statements covering complex financial data.
Superior demonstration in oral and written communication skills, to include public speaking, and the ability to work in a team environment as well as the ability to work independently.
Ability to establish work schedules and goals to accomplish the objectives of the tasks.
Experience in developing policies and procedures.
Ability to develop and make effective presentations to Management.
Additional Considerations:
Possession of a CPA/CGFM certificate and/or experience in higher education is a plus.
Experience working in the Banner system and/or State Cardinal system is a plus.
