General Description
The purpose of this job is to provide difficult technical and skilled support work assisting with state income, real estate, personal property, business license, local option taxes, and the general operation of the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office, preparing, analyzing, and maintaining files and records.
This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position.
Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Reviews, audits, compiles and establishes business license applications and supporting documentation applicable to issuance of license with state and local laws and ordinances.
Reviews, audits, compiles and establishes local option tax filings and ensures monthly compliance.
Reviews weekly, monthly, and annual downloads of personal property records for uniform and equitable assessments.
Research wills and deeds for accuracy of ownership.
Communicate with taxpayers and the legal community to resolve discrepancies.
Interprets and administers both State and local Codes to ensure compliance, uniformity, equity, and fair assessments.
Researches, collects and ensures compliance of local and state regulations and validation of required certifications of businesses that are required to maintain state licensure.
Communicates, coordinates and assists with other offices such as Virginia Tax Department, Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, etc.
and related field audit personnel to ensure compliance in all related areas.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires an Associate degree in accounting, finance or related field supplemented by four (4) years of responsible experience in tax administration, accounting, bookkeeping; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Physical Demands
Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
