gov Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of State Police is seeking an experienced Flatbed Tow Truck Operator for local and statewide towing and equipment transport.
The Tow Truck Operator will be working in an exciting fast paced, family diverse, team-oriented atmosphere where attention to detail is key.
The Tow Truck Operator will be traveling to Department and public facilities throughout the state and will need to project a professional image of the Department and themselves.
This is where attention to detail counts! As a Tow Truck Operator, you will be responsible for safe driving, loading/unloading vehicles, and equipment.
A strong background in accident recovery, roadside assistance, or equipment hauling experience is required.
Expectations include basic mechanical skills; the ability to perform preventative and routine maintenance properly on Department rollback carriers; and to keep them clean inside and out.
Adherence to all safety measures and truck equipment is paramount.
Responsible for providing and/or receiving feedback as an integral part of growth & training.
The ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals in a team.

•Transports and shuffles vehicles throughout the Commonwealth.
•The ability to transport or drive any type of Department owned vehicle.
•The ability to properly attach cables, chains, straps, or any other type of towing/transport equipment to vehicles, cargo and any loose or damaged parts for safe transport.
•The ability to properly load and unload vehicles and cargo from tow trucks and trailers.
•The ability to connect any necessary "tow lights" to the back of towed vehicles.
•The ability to safely utilize tow truck "wheel lift" equipment to prevent any further damage to the vehicles or motoring public.
•Completes tire changes, assists with vehicle lockouts, and provide, jump starts.
•Maintains the Department tow truck by completing daily and monthly inspections to include checking tire pressure, checking fluids, and inspecting and replacing equipment.
•Ensures the Department tow truck is maintained and ready at a moment's notice.
•Monitors and maintains preventive maintenance service schedules, and fuel and maintenance logs.
•Ensures vehicle is always fueled and ready for the next pickup.
•Washes and cleans the Department tow truck.
Minimum Qualifications •Working knowledge of operating conventional towing and roll-back trucks.
•Demonstrated ability to understand the operability of automobiles (trucks, cars, motorcycles) and automotive maintenance; to lift, load, push, reach, stoop and climb while working under adverse temperatures and weather conditions; to complete safety/pre-check inspections and/or documentation; the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English with individuals inside and outside of the organization; and to operate passenger vehicles and trucks with automatic and manual transmissions.
•High school diploma or receipt of GED within six months of employment required.
•Virginia Operator's License with safe driving record required.
•Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within six months from employment.
•Experience working as a tow truck driver, wrecker, repossessing or transporting vehicles.
•Occasional, overnight travel may be required.
Additional Considerations •Experience in driving and operating a flatbed and/or wheel-lift preferred.
•Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills preferred.
•Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted is preferred.
